In November 1960, John Fitzgerald Kennedy became the youngest president of the United States. People liked
him because he had new ideas. John Kennedy gave Americans hope for the future.
Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917. He was the second of nine children. His family was one of the most wealthy
and powerful in America. His father, Joseph, was so rich that he gave each of his children one million dollars when
they reached the age of twenty-one. Kennedy's mother, Rose, lived to the age of 104. Her religious faith and
strength of character helped the family through its tragedies and triumphs.
As a child, Kennedy was sickly. He admired his brother, Joe, who was athletic and intelligent. Their father wanted
Joe to be president one day. But Joe was killed during World War II. John was almost killed too. A Japanese
warship hit his boat, but he survived the crash. He won a medal for saving his men.
After the war, John Kennedy began a career in politics. When he became president, he gave a famous speech. He
promised to work for freedom around the world. He asked people to give something of themselves.
"Ask not what your country can do for you," he said. "Ask what you can do for your country."
Kennedy was very popular during his early presidency. People liked him and his wife, Jacqueline. She was young,
beautiful, and elegant. People loved to see photos of the Kennedys with their two children, John and Caroline.
They were the first children in the White House in fifty years.
Kennedy began the space program that put a man on the moon in 1969. He also started the Peace Corps. Thousands
of young Americans volunteered to work where they were needed in countries around the world.
On November 22, 1963, John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. The world was filled with shock and sorrow.
